Typefaces and their uses |
- Understanding
the Goal: You have to gain a clear
understanding about the target audiences and what emotion you want to
evoke. The end goal will guide you through the process. The typeface you
choose should meet two needs: legibility and readability.
- Legibility:
Many of the designers confuse legibility and readability and hold them as
one. Legibility is the design of a typeface such as the width of strokes,
distinction between serif and others, etc. The audiences can easily
distinguish one letter from another when legibility is good. The
decorative typefaces have very low legibility as they are meant to be
glanced at rather then read through. While the typefaces used in newspaper
or novel publications are highly legible.
- Readability:
Readability can be judged by how the typeface mingles with other design
aspects such as graphics and colors. When a typeface is easily readable it
would attract more attention. Size and tilt degrees of a typeface are also
responsible for the readability. There are two ways of going about
attaining readability – either have a typeface set before planning the
design or plan a typeface as par the design.
- Intent:
Before choosing a typeface it is very important to consider the intent.
There are particular typefaces for particular needs. Such as Cooper Black
is ideal for signage, but it cannot be used for books. So, when you are
publishing a book Serif family typefaces would be more appropriate.
- Aesthetics:
The typeface used should also conform to the design. There are specific
typefaces for lighthearted designs and serious ones. The trick lies in
understanding the tone and color of design and then choosing a matching
typeface.
